I want to start posting more often so here is a work in progress of a character in my comic book named Gardner. There are some interesting physical attributes to them that I have yet to develop here. Sometime before I completed the roughs for my comic, I experimented with style. Issue 1 is set in the 1920s and I want to integrate noir, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau styles into the pages. There are also textures I explored with grain and paper texture (digital paper, obviously) as well as cool & warm colors. Lastly, I did some exercises with dialogue and captions and briefly some SFX. I plan to spend more time focusing specifically on SFX and drawing it by hand instead of utilizing fonts. Overall, it was a good exercise to understand how I may want to integrate different elements to best tell the story. Follow for more and sign up for updates on the release of Issue 1.

I use mind maps a lot to brainstorm and clarify my ideas for my comic book story, Dark Time, a dark fantasy time travel epic. One, in particular, helped me work through my comic story's central theme and define what I wanted my audience to take away from my story. So, I decided to create a free theme development template to assist others. The mind map template will help you develop and brainstorm a story or book theme, motifs, symbols, and other overarching story details such as character, setting, tone, mood, and literary devices. The template is in Figjam, a free browser-based whiteboarding and diagramming tool. It is easy to use and will allow you to edit the template and create additional nodes.
